From
its inception, the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company
had relied on a solely volunteer force until the
1960's. From then till 1975, the volunteers
were accompanied by Prince William County career
personnel which supplemented the volunteer staff
while they were at their daytime jobs. Once
Manassas established city status in 1976, county
personnel were detailed to county stations in order
for the city to hire their first career fireman. |

|
Ronnie
Stanley was the first fireman hired to provide
services to the citizens of the City of Manassas.
Since that time the career staff has increased
gradually over the years to nine, to provide
coverage Monday thru Friday from 0700 to 1700.
Combined, the current career staff have over 100
years of firefighter experience. |

The responsibility of the career staff is the
day to day operations, maintenance of the
station and apparatus, public education and
staffing of the Engine, Tower and HAZMAT unit
just to name a few, along with various other
assigned duties. The career staff falls
under the direction of the current fire chief of
the MVFC, Don Holman. The relationship
between the career staff and the volunteers is
outstanding. There has always been a motto
coined by past fire chief Wade House: "We
are one and we are a team", and this motto will
definitely carry on for years to come. |
|
There has not been much of a turnover rate with
the career staff though I would like to mention
those who have served as career fireman for the
city in the past and where they are today.
Greg King (Dekalb County, Georgia Fire
Department), Gene Beach (Fairfax County,
Virginia Fire and Rescue Department), Brett
Bowman (Battalion Fire Chief, Prince William
County Fire and Rescue), Jim Nilo (Fire Chief,
Richmond International Airport), Clare Halsey
(Arlington County, Virginia Fire and Rescue
Department), James Gordon (District of Columbia
Fire Department), Mike Brown (electrical
contractor), Ian O'Byrne (District of Columbia
Fire Department). |
 |
|
As
a special note: Ronnie Stanley, who was the
first to be hired by the City, retired with 29
years of service in February of
2005. |
