VAN ON FIRE INSIDE COMMERCIAL OCCUPANCY

July 17, 2003 - At 0232 hrs, a commercial box assignment was sent to 8801 Commerce Court for a report of smoke coming from the roof at that box location. Foam Engine 1, Tower 1, Battalion 81, and Chief 1-1 responded along with the mutual companies. With smoke in the area, the Foam Engine laid out, and with the tower, arrived to find smoke showing from the roof of a multi occupancy strip. At first, crews had trouble determining which occupancy the fire was in. Since the initial dispatch reported a commercial flooring store, they searched that address first. The Tower's crew forced open the door and advanced ahead of the Foam Engine through heavy smoke conditions, finding a van on fire inside the work bay. They hit what they could with their cans and then forced the roll up door open to ventilate while the Engine extinguished the rest of the fire. Battalion 81 (Captain Pope) had the command. FM 1 and 2 were called to the scene and units began clearing within the hour. The Tower remained on the scene until 0515, providing lighting for the FMs.
