October 21, 2000 – At 1229 hrs today, Engine
1-1, Attack 1, Foam 1, and Spill 1 responded to
10606 Observation Way for a Presidential landing
detail. With the Presidents Cup golf tournament
taking place at the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf
Club in
Gainesville, President Bill Clinton was flown in to
the Manassas Regional Airport and from there,
transported by the secret service to the tournament.
Oddly enough, while in staging, an
alert 3 was sounded. Manassas Ground advised that an
experimental aircraft had crashed off the southern
end of runway 34 Right. All units except for the
engine responded from their position at the standby
along with units from Prince William County that
came in at 11811 Bristow Road. Crews from Attack
and Foam 1 found the plane leaking fuel but no
injuries or major damage. Lt Lausch in Engine 1-1
had command while Chief 1-1, who was in Foam 1, had
operations. With the hazards secured, the scene
turned over to Federal Aviation Administration and
the Virginia State Police. The crew from Engine 1-1
stood by as the President took off with no issues
and all units went ready at 1516. |
