VOLUNTEERS MAKE IMPRESSIVE STOP ON HOUSE FIRE

January 11, 1997 - Manassas Volunteers responded to 10159 Forest Hills Circle for a house fire. The fire started as the homeowner was draining gasoline from two classic automobiles inside the homes attached garage. Vapors from the gasoline were ignited by a nearby Kerosene heater, creating a large fireball in the well sealed garage. The homeowner, who suffered serious burns during the explosion, managed to escape the blaze, call 911, and push a third classic car from in front on the garage out to the street. The crew from Engine 1 arrived and made entry through the front door of the home with an 1 1/2 attack line. Encountering heavy fire and extreme heat, they pushed in knocking down the visible fire in the entry way of the house. Because of the unrelenting heat, the crew was unable to make it down the stairs and hallway which lead to the garage. They tried to get a shot on the fire from their position in the hallway, though they couldn't get around the corner. With two cars and the entire garage going, they simply didn't have enough water to knock down the large amount fire. They continued to hold their position in the hallway, trying to stop the fire from spreading any further. With no progress visible form the outside, Command 1 (Chief Lesnick) pulled the plug. He ordered all crews out of the building. Crews then hit the fire in the garage from the outside with several handlines, quickly knocking a significant amount of fire down. Chief Lesnick then ordered units back into the building to extinguish the remaining fire in the house. Crews from the City found plenty of fire still inside the home. One crew headed above the garage to extinguish the bedrooms while the other line went and extinguished heavy fire in the living and rec rooms. The heat and smoke was so intense that it baked every surface in the entire home. The rest of the fire went out quickly. The owner of the house was flow to the burn center.
