FOAM ENGINE AND TOWER TAKE IN FIRE ON MANASSAS DRIVE

March  15, 2003 - Just before 1545 hrs, Chief 8-1 (Deem) notified Prince William County Fire Communications of fire in the basement of an occupied dwelling at 7828 Manassas Drive. At the same time communications was receiving numerous calls reporting the fire and in the process of setting up the run card. At 1552 hrs, Foam Engine and Tower 1 responded on mutual box 08-05. On arrival Engine 8 (J Rose, now a MVFC fireman) reported heavy fire showing from a 1 and a half story Cape Cod. Their crew stretched an attack line through the front door and encountered heavy fire conditions. They stretched to the right and made their way towards the back of the home. Truck 11 arrived second and was ordered by command to take a line to the basement. The crew from Engine 8 knocked down 3 rooms before conditions became intolerable. With fire still in the basement, no ventilation, and no report on a second line in service, Engine 8's crew pulled out as they began to get burned. Foam Engine 1 arrived third and took the second due position, completing 8's split lay. They picked up the line 8's crew had left at the front door and made their way in. They moved toward the back of the home and extinguished the rest of the fire on the first floor. The Tower's crew vented all three floors and performed the searches. Truck 11 extinguished a single room in the basement. Crews found extension behind a knee wall on the second floor. The Tower opened that up and performed extensive overhaul. Chief 8 (Griffith) had the command. The officer from Engine 8 was transported to Prince William Hospital with second degree burns to arms and ears. City units went ready at 1812 hrs.
