HAZMAT SUPPORT 501 WINS WINCHESTER PARADE

April 30, 2004 - HAZMAT Support 501 participated in the Firefighter's Parade at the 77th annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester Virginia today.  With over 150 fire and rescue units, the parade is one of, if not the largest firefighter parades in the country.  The parade itself is a silent one, no sirens or horns allowed.  HMS501 entered the apparatus judging and won first place in the “Fire Department Heavy Rescue” category.  The awards are presented later that night at Round Hill Community Volunteer Fire Department in Frederick County VA.  Since no sirens are allowed at the parade, after the awards ceremony, a traditional “let it loose” exit is performed by the apparatus at the ceremony.  If you like bright lights and loud sirens, watch the videos.  Beware, they are LOUD.  A big thanks goes out to the volunteers at Round Hill Community VFD for hosting the awards ceremony, again.

CARELESS ERRATIC TRUCK DRIVER RAVAGES MANASSAS NEIGHBORHOOD

April 26, 2004 - At 1401 hrs Engine 501 responded today for a report of wires down in the 8800 block of Peabody Street.  On arrival they were shocked to find multiple poles snapped off and a transformer on the ground, its contents having already spilled out. Several household service lines had also been completely ripped down.  The damage was extensive.  Hazmat and Chief 501 were special called to the scene.  Hazmat 501 contained the spill.  The driver of the semi truck, who had left the scene, was pulled over minutes later after a resident reported seeing a tractor trailer dragging electric lines behind it driving through their neighborhood.   Roughly 30 feet of wire was tangled around the trucks rear axel.  The driver denied all wrong doing except, there were pieces of the truck, such as an air horn and a piece of a bumper/mud flap at the scene.  The driver was arrested and units cleared 1550.

LARGE FIRE WITH HAZMAT ON QUARRY ROAD

April 8, 2004 - At 2207 hrs. Prince William County Fire Communications dispatched a street assignment for a fire in the area of the Wal-Mart on Liberia Avenue just across the City line. As Foam Engine and Chief 501 were responding on the mutual box, additional information was provided sending units to the dead end of Quarry Road.  Foam Engine 501 found a cargo container and a large trailer well off.  The fire involved numerous small gas powered machines such as weed wackers, lawn mowers, and chainsaws.  Several propane tanks were also involved and could be heard hissing and exploding as the fire attack progressed.  Several 55 gallon drums were exposed to the fire but did not rupture.
The crew from the Foam Engine initiated the attack with a 2 1/2 inch hose line, operating for several minutes without any other units or a water supply.  Finally a water supply was established using the 1300 feet of 4" supply hose that they had laid as they were going down the narrow road that led to the scene.  As other crews arrived, numerous other lines were put into service.  Tower 501 and Engine 501 also responded.  Engine 501 later returned to the station in order to get HAZMAT Support 501 because of the amount of petroleum products that were on fire. The HAZMAT crew deployed oil absorbent pads to contain as much of the oil products as possible.  Manassas City and Prince William County Fire Marshals arrived on scene to work on determining a cause of the fire.  Fire units from Manassas, Manassas Park, Yorkshire, Stonewall Jackson, Lake Jackson, Buckhall, West Centreville (Fairfax County), Coles District, and Dale City were on the scene assisting.  All units cleared the scene around 0215.
