CREWS DRILL WITH NEW ROPE RESCUE EQUIPMENT

August 26, 2005 - Recently Tower 501 received a complete overhaul of its rope rescue equipment. Added to it, among 400 feet of new life line rope, were 4 new class II harnesses, a Yosemite rig for the stokes basket, 4 new tactical rescue style helmets, all new hardware, rigging, and other specialty equipment. The upgrade was much needed. We now carry a total of 1000 feet of life line, 4 class II harnesses and two class III harnesses. The Yosemite rig for the stokes basket came from a tactic that is used in Fairfax County. The rigging allows the stokes operation to occur with a limited amount of man power with greater control. It also incorporates a "puke" line which can rotate the basket sideways incase the patient has an airway issue while being hoisted or lowered. The new system incorporates a main line, a belay line and a 3 to 1 rig. This allows for multiple people or equipment to be lowered, hoisted or repel at the same time. Both Volunteer and Career crews practice using the new rigs. This new equipment will increase the tactical rescue abilities of the Tower greatly.
