T-BONE CRASH SENDS TWO TO THE HOSPITAL

August 28, 2007 – At 1239 hours, Manassas City Fire Communications dispatched a T-bone crash in the intersection of Wellington Road and Fairview Avenue. The Wagon and Chief cleared from the box in the South and were quickly on scene. They found a van in the intersection and a sedan with damage to the Driver's side off the road. The Wagon's crew had to force driver's door open with Haligan bar to gain access to the driver. They assessed both occupants of the vehicle, immobilizing each. After assisting the Medic with loading the patients, they handled the hazards and went ready at 1304 hours.

THE DAY CONTINUES WITH A SMALL KITCHEN FIRE IN GEORGETOWN SOUTH

August 28, 2007 – At 1231 hours, box alarm 81-13 transmitted for 9842 Maury Lane, in Georgetown South. Engine, Wagon, Tower, and Chief 501 were quickly on the street with 13 men. While responding, communications advised the fire was in the kitchen, the occupants had evacuated, and were now saying the house may be fully involved. Crews, thinking they were going to work, arrived to find smoke showing from a two story brick row. Inside they found a small fire in the kitchen with minor extension into cabinets. The box was quickly held to Co.1 only, and crews opened up and vented. The Wagon and Chief cut loose for a wreck while the other units remained on scene until 1255 hours.

DISCO BURGLAR ALARM BRINGS A FULL ASSIGNMENT

August 25, 2007 – At 1219 hours, mutual box 89-01 was transmitted for a building fire at 8492 Centreville Road, bringing Wagon 501 as the second due engine company. They arrived right behind Wagon 509 and both crews found heavy smoke inside the store. It was quickly realized that there was no fire but instead, the smoke or fog, was the result of some kind of insane burglar alarm. Apparently, when the alarm is activated, a fog machine kicks on to scare the evil robbers away. All that was missing was some trance music and some glow sticks, and luckily neither could be found. Crews vented the smoke and the Wagon went ready at 1253 hours.

BUILDING FIRE IN THE COUNTY WITH A MAYDAY

August 21, 2007 – At 1709 hours, mutual box 16-04 was sounded for 10404 Moore Drive, the old Buckhall Store. Battalion 504 arrived and advised fire in the kitchen on the first floor. Tower 501 arrived behind Wagon 509 and 507 to find a large amount of smoke showing. As they made entry with Wagon 509, crews encountered thick black smoke, high heat, and extremely cluttered conditions. Due to the layout of the jumbled store, crews had a difficult time locating and accessing the fire room, which was in the Charlie and delta quadrants of the first floor. With only three windows on the fire floor, the Tower's horizontal ventilation less than effective. While the Tower's outside crew was preparing to vent the roof and second floor, a serious event occurred. As Wagon 509 continued to search for the room, a display rack fell onto their lineman. His officer moved the rack but by this time, in the intense heat, both firemen had become disoriented. With conditions inside rapidly going south, Wagon 509 smartly transmitted a MAYDAY. Having an idea of where Wagon 509 was in the store, Tower 501's inside crew quickly located the men and both crews exited the building together, uninjured.  Wagon 507 was then able to get a good knock on the fire from side D. At the same time Tower 501 began roof ventilation and opened up the exterior wall on the D side, second floor, where the fire had extended. Other companies were put to work significantly opening up the Balloon frame building and checking for extension. Tower 501 performed PPV and provided lights. They went ready at 1954 hours.

Wagon 509 arrived first to find a room on the first floor that was beginning to creep into the hallway. Wagon 501 arrived quickly behind 509 and backed them up while the Tower searched and ventilated both floors. The fire was quickly knocked down and units from the City remained on scene to overhaul until being released at 0943 hours.

ONE INTO A HOUSE IN THE SOUTH

August 16, 2007 – At 1351 hours, Wagon and Tower 501 responded to the 9800 block of Maury Lane for a personal injury accident with one into a building. Tower 501 arrived to find a large whole punched into the side of one of the rowhomes. The driver had removed the vehicle prior to our arrived and was found, uninjured, in the bravo exposure, which is where they reside. The Tower's crew forced entry into the involved house, conducted a quick primary, and checked the stability of the structure. At the building inspectors request, Tower and Rescue 501 shored up the front wall. The Wagon and Tower cleared within an hour.

WAGON RUNS HOMICIDE IN THE FIRST DUE

August 14, 2007 – A little after 0800 hours this morning, Manassas City police officers responded to the 8600 block of Mahogany Court for a complaint of loud music and people drinking alcohol. Shortly thereafter, cops found the beaten body of a 19-year-old on a bloodied mattress in a basement apartment of 8638 Mahogany Court. Wagon 501, along with the medic, were dispatched to the scene. Once there crews quickly initiated resuscitative efforts. The teen was transported to Prince William Hospital with CPR in progress but was later pronounced dead. According to the Manassas Journal Messenger, police ruled her death a homicide and are searching for 18-year-old Jose Martinez-Zeron, the only suspect in the case who, last week, was charged by Manassas Park police for allegedly providing three false identities and for driving without a license.

August 10, 2007 – At 1526 hours today, Prince William County Fire Communications transmitted a box alarm for fire in a vacant house in the 10900 block of Ballsford Road bringing Engine and Chief 501. The first due companies arrived to find a good fire going on the second floor of an abandoned dwelling that is frequently the home of vagrants and drug users. The Engine arrived second and supplied Wagon 511 while the crew assisted 511's guys with placing their line in service.  Engine 501 then extended their own line and backed up Wagon 511 on the second floor. The fire was quickly extinguished and Engine 501 remained on scene to assist with overhaul until 1628 hours when they were released and headed back to the City. Chief 501 (Holman) had operations.

2 ALARMS FOR A STRIP MALL IN THE FIRST DUE

August 06, 2007 – At 2304 hours this evening, box alarm 81-02 was transmitted for a building fire at 8694 Liberia Avenue. Engine 501 quickly arrived on the scene of an approximately 200 x 100 foot strip mall and reported heavy smoke showing from multiple occupancies. At the same time, a small amount of fire began to show itself through the roof. As the second alarm was being transmitted, the Engine’s crew ran a line into the bravo exposure to head off the fire. Backed up by the rest of the first alarm engine companies who took their various assigned positions, the crew from Engine 501 began pulling ceiling tiles only to find a second ceiling beyond the first. Using long hooks, companies began breaking through while Engine 501 used their line to burst through to the cockloft. Crews also exposed the areas behind the overhangs in front of the building. Once everything was opened up, fire was found throughout about half of the structure. Tower 501 and Truck 511 arrived and quickly began roof ventilation. As the second alarm companies began to arrive, first alarm crews were beginning to get a good knock on the fire. The second alarm was put to work in the exposures opening up as the building had many voids. With the temperatures and humidity already beyond ridiculous for after midnight, it wasn’t long before crews were being rotated out. The second alarm units overhauled extensively in all of the occupancies. Thanks to all of the mutual aid companies. A stellar and aggressive effort by all crews on the box brought the fire quickly under control. Company 1 cleared at 0138 hours.
