ENGINE ON FATAL HOUSE FIRE IN GAINESVILLE

December 2, 2004 - At 0034 hrs, Engine 501 was dispatched on special alarm to a house fire with a report of people trapped in the 7300 blk of Old Carolina Road in Prince William County.  Upon arrival, the Engine crew found units operating in a defensive mode at a two-story, wood frame house well-involved in fire. There were reports that one occupant was trapped in the upstairs bedroom, so the crew consisting of Captain Lausch, Wagon Driver Denton, Firefighters Weidhaas and Sepulveda attempted to make entry into the bedroom via a ground ladder.  Due to the amount of fire the crew encountered, all attempts were unsuccessful.  Once most of the fire was knocked down to a point where entry could be made, the Engine crew went in with the protection of a hoseline and began searching for the victim.  Moments later, the crew from Engine 501 located the occupant at the top of the steps near the upstairs bedroom.  The 76 year old man had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.  Final extinguishment was completed and Engine 501 cleared the scene at 0303 hrs.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of the victim.
