ENGINE RUNS 3RD DUE TO WORKING FIRE IN THE COUNTY

January 25, 2006 - Just after 0800 hrs this morning, Prince William County Fire Communications began receiving 911 calls reporting a house fire at 8207 Lomond South Drive. At 0821 hrs, box 11-16 was sounded bringing Engine 501A from the City as the 3rd due engine company. While units were responding, communications informed the units that callers were reporting visible fire from the home. Truck 511 arrived first and announced the working fire. Once crews were inside they found a room off on the first floor. While Engine 511 was getting a line on that, Engine 508 began a search of the second floor. Engine 511 reported the bulk of the fire on the first floor was knocked down, but they believed it had made its way into the attic. Engine 501A arrived with a secondary hydrant and reported to command. Engine 508 was ordered by the Chief to come down to the first floor and the crew from Engine 501A was ordered to the second floor and get into the roof. Their crew found a large amount of fire throughout the entire attic. Engine 501A's Officer, along with members of Truck 511 aggressively hooked the ceiling while 501's lineman extinguished all the fire back to its point of origin. With the fire in the attic out, Engine 501A's crew came out and exchanged bottles. They were then ordered by Command to complete a search of the first floor and garage. With that clear, Command had them report to the second floor to ventilate and extinguish some extension in the exterior wall of the delta quadrant. With all fire extinguished, crews began overhaul and the Engine went ready at 0949 hrs. The Manassas Journal Messenger reported that the fire displaced at least six adults and three children, and that it originated in a bedroom on the ground level, after one of the children accidentally knocked a candle into a trash can.

ENGINE AND TOWER ON HOUSE FIRE IN MANASSAS PARK

January 21, 2006 - Early this morning at 0406 hrs, crews from the City were alerted to respond on mutual box 89-01 for a fire at 102 Manassas Drive. Wagon 509, quartered just down the street, arrived quickly taking their own hydrant. Their crew stretched a line to the second floor, where they found a room off. They called for water and began to get a good knock on the fire. Engine 501A and Tower 501 arrived second, just after 509. The Engine's crew pulled a second line and backed up Wagon 509, while the Tower's crew through three ladders and began opening up and searching. Once the two engine companies had

the fire room knocked down, the Tower opened up the knee walls and ceilings exposing more fire in the attic space. That fire was also quickly extinguished. The home was vacant and the primary and secondary searches were negative. The Engine cleared at 0441 hrs while the Tower cleared at 0512.

TOWER ON SMALL FIRE IN LAKE JACKSON

January 20, 2006 - This evening at 1759 hrs, Engine 501A and Tower 501 responded on mutual box 07-05 for a report of fire in a home at 11570 Arrington Court, in Lake Jackson. Units arrived to find a small fire in the attic of the house. The Engine Company was ordered to stage while the Tower's crew came in and opened up the walls and ceilings checking for extension. The Engine cleared at 1815 while the Tower cleared a hour later.

RIGHT HAND TURN FROM LEFT HAND LANE... BRILLIANT

January 19, 2006 - At 0637 hrs, just as units were clearing a good intent box in the County, Manassas Fire Communications dispatched the Engine and Hazmat to a fuel spill in the area of Liberia Avenue and Mathis Avenue. Companies found the spill in the 9200 block of Sudley Road. The spill was the result of an auto accident involving a fuel tanker. The skillful driver of the tanker decided to make a right hand turn from the left hand lane, paying no attention to a passenger vehicle already in the turn lane. On impact, the trailer struck the car, ripping off several transfer valves from underneath the trailer. Luckily, only a small amount of fuel was spilled and nothing caught fire. This splendid decision did however put quite a snarl in morning rush hour. Crews put down absorbent and went ready at 0700 hrs.

CREWS FIND SMALL FIRE IN LOCAL LAUNDROMAT

January 16, 2006 - At 1547 hrs, box alarm 81-15 was transmitted for a report of fire in a commercial occupancy at 10163 Hastings Drive. Engine 501A, Wagon 501 and Tower 501 responded. On arrival, crews found light smoke coming from the front door. The Engine ran the 200 into the building and found employees trying to throw buckets of water on a small fire in the rear of the store. The fire was located on top of a laundry room. A defective light sparked a fire igniting mounds of lint that had built up over time on the top of the room. The fire also involved several appliances that were on top of the room. The fire was quickly extinguished and the Tower opened up and overhauled. Crews went ready at 1630 hrs.

ENGINE FINDS SEVERAL DUMPSTERS OFF NEXT TO BUILDING

January 16, 2006 - At 0019 hrs, the Engine Company responded to 8910 Centreville Road for a dumpster fire to the rear of that box location. On arrival, Engine 501A found several dumpsters involved up against a thrift shop. The crew deployed the trash line and quickly extinguished the fire before it could damage the building. The Engine went ready at 0110 hrs.

ENGINE FINDS SMALL FIRE CAUSED BY CARELESS SMOKING

January 15, 2006 - Today at 1320 hrs, companies were dispatched on box 81-06 for a report of a town home on fire at 8312 Felsted Lane. On arrival Engine 501A found a relatively small fire on the outside of the box address. Crews stretched a line and the fire was extinguished. Some minor overhaul was conducted to check for extension and the Engine went ready at 1401 hrs. The FM was notified and the probable cause was careless smoking.

SERIOUS DAMAGE AFTER A FORTUNATLY MINOR ACCIDENT

January 13, 2006 - At 1137 hrs, the Engine Company was sent out to investigate a personal injury accident at 8629 Sudley Road, directly in front of Prince William Hospital. Engine 501A arrived to find two vehicles involved in the crash. The first had relatively no damage while the second, which came to rest in the median, had sheared off one rear tire and shifted the rear axel nearly a foot out of position. The vehicle apparently spun around, striking the curb with the rear driver's wheel, then continued spinning and struck the curb on the passengers side. With the speed involved in the crash, the driver is fortunate that the vehicle did not role over. The Engine handled the hazards while the medics tended to the patient. They went ready at 1149 hrs.

ENGINE, TOWER, AND CHIEF ON PINE STREET TRAILER FIRE

January 7, 2006 - Late this evening, Prince William County Fire Communications began receiving 911 calls about a trailer fire in the vicinity of 7625 Pine Street. At 2325 hrs, box 08-05 was struck bringing Engine 501A, Tower 501, and Chief 501 from the City. As additional calls came in, the County hit a second alarm because callers were reporting that the fire was spreading to multiple exposures. Engine 508 arrived and reported they had one trailer well involved. Wagon 509 arrived, picked up 508's line, and put a second attack line in service to protect the exposure. Chief and Tower 501 arrived shortly thereafter. The Tower went straight to work doing primary searches on the two exposures. Chief 501 (Holman) took the command and quickly returned the second alarm. Both of the Tower's searches were negative and they quickly began pulling the siding off of the trailer to expose the rest of the fire for the engine companies. Engine 501A arrived and backed up the two crews already operating hand lines. Companies had the fire contained to the initial fire building and reported the bulk knocked down within 12 minutes. Secondary searches were negative. With a large amount of overhaul to do, Chief 501 held himself, Engines 508, 509, and 501; Trucks 501 and 511; and Rescue Squad 508A. City units cleared at 0113 hrs. The Manassas Journal Messenger reported that arson was the cause of the fire.

MEMBERS START CPR ON HEROIN OVERDOSE PATIENT

January 7, 2006 - At 2316 hrs, Members of the Manassas and Yorkshire Volunteer Fire Departments were at a local restaurant watching one of Co. 1's members sing in his "Honky Tonk" Band, when a waitress notified the members of a medical emergency in the restaurant. Members from both departments began assessing the patient. At the same time, City Fire Communications dispatched units to a choking at that box location. Friends of the victim told the members that the patient had just done heroin. CPR was started immediately as the patient was found to have no pulse and was not breathing. Chief 501 upgraded the run with communications. After a short time, a pulse was found so members continued bagging the patient until the medic arrived. As an aside, FF James Rose's performance that night is sure to secure him the title of the next "Nashville Superstar".

TOWER RUNS FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE PARKWAY

January 7, 2006 - At 2121 hrs, Tower 501 responded on mutual box 16-01, to the Prince William County Parkway at Hynson Drive for a personal injury accident with the report of persons trapped. On arrival, Wagon 516 advised a single vehicle into a tree with live power lines down and multiple patients, one of which was not breathing. After a closer investigation, it was realized that there were 3 victims, one DOA, and two priority 1 traumas. It appeared that the vehicle left the roadway, hit a culvert, went airborne, and struck a utility pole shearing it into three pieces before coming to rest against a tree. Two of the three occupants of the vehicle were ejected during the crash, the third was found partially hanging out of the driver's door. Initially, the third patient was reported trapped, but the Tower's crew was able to assist in removing the patient without cutting on the car. Two medivacs were requested. Truck 511 landed Aircare 1 and 4. Medic 501 and 507 transported both patients to the LZ, and they were flown to local trauma centers. Tower 501 cleared at 2203 hrs.

ENGINE AND TOWER RUN 2ND DUE TO HAMPTON INN

January 6, 2006 - At 0146 hrs, both Engine 501A and Tower 501 responded second due on the box, to 7295 Williamson Boulevard, the Hampton Inn, for a report of smoke on the 6th floor. Engine 511 arrived on the scene and reported nothing evident. They advised the Chief that maintenance was reporting a malfunctioning heat pump in room 625. Truck 511 made it to the room first and reported heavy smoke conditions. Engine 501A arrived quickly, grabbed their racks and headed up to the 6th floor. They hooked into the standpipe and proceeded to the room. Tower 501 arrived and was ordered to began evacuating the building. Operations also had the Tower check the room below which was clear. Engine 501A confirmed a defective appliance and the power was removed. With heavy smoke conditions, Command held the Engines and Trucks from 511 and 501 and Quint 504 for smoke removal. City units cleared at 0245 hrs. Chief 511 (Peters) had the Command.

TOWER SPECIALED ON BUCKHALL HOUSE FIRE

January 3, 2006 - At 1833 hrs, Tower 501 responded with six volunteers on mutual box 16-06 for a report of fire in a home at 10990 Stonebrook Drive. Not normally due on the box, Tower 501 was special called to respond as the only special service piece on the alarm. Wagon 516 arrived and reported heavy fire from the second floor. They stretched a line and made entry. When the Tower arrived, there was still plenty of fire in the house. Their crew split into two teams. The Officer, Hook, and Bar Man went in and began opening up for the two engine companies operating inside. The Outside Vent Man and Roof Man threw ladders and began ventilating. Companies extinguished the large amount of fire on the second floor but, with vaulted ceilings and holes in the floor, crews had a particularly tough time getting to what was left in the attic and numerous voids. A member of the Tower's crew removed two cats from the home.  They cleared at 2059 hours.

ENGINE COMPANY FINDS FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT

January 3, 2006 - Today at 1420 hrs, Engine 501 was sent out for an auto at 8785 Deblanc Place. They arrived to find the engine compartment of the car on fire. The lineman made quick work of the fire. The FM was requested and the Engine went ready at 1452 hrs.

SEVEN OUT OF NINE TRANSPORTED AFTER ACCIDENT

January 2, 2006 - At 1754 hrs, City Fire Communications alerted Companies to a personal injury accident with reported entrapment at 9502 Waterford Drive. Engine 501, Foam Engine 501, Tower 501, and Assistant Chief 501 responded with 14 volunteers. Rescue Chief 501 arrived first and advised he had two vehicles, one of which was overturned. Several patients remained in both of the vehicles and it appeared the Tower would have to cut, however, most of them ended up crawling out on their own. The Engine Company did pop a door with the irons. All three units assisted with patient care and controlling hazards. Of the nine patients found in the two cars, seven were transported. Company 1 units went ready at 1825 hrs.
