YOU
DON'T NEED TO BE IN KANSAS TO HAVE A HOUSE DROPPED ON
YOU |
May 9,
2005 - At 1401 hrs, just prior to the start of rush
hour, Engine, Tower, Chief 501 and Chief 501A
responded along with units from the Rescue Squad for
an overturned vehicle. On arrival they found a
tractor trailer, hauling a construction trailer that
had flipped onto 3 cars in an adjacent turn lane.
Crews found three victims, one of which was pinned
in her vehicle. While the Engine Capitan (Rohs)
surveyed the scene, his crew pulled a line as the
Tower crew started assembling extrication equipment
and airbags. The two crews then started
stabilizing the trailer. Firefighters set up
cribbing for the airbags which they used to lift up
the trailer just far enough so that one of the
Tower's firefighters could cut the A post which had
squished the steering wheel down on the patients
thighs pinning her in the car. Once the crews
removed that obstruction they were able to get her
out of the car. From the time crews had the
equipment in place, it took less than 10 minuets to
get her out. The patient saw the trailer flipping
and leaned over into the passenger seat just in time to
avoid being crushed. Injuries to the second patient were
minor neck and back pain and the third patient was
uninjured. The first patient was airlifted via Medstar 3 to INOVA hospital and released later that
evening. Wagon 508 had the LZ.
Crews stayed on scene to assist with up righting the
trailer. They finally cleared at 1720 hrs.
Chief 501 (Holman) had command.
