FOAM ENGINE STANDS BY AT ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE

May 22, 2005 - This weekend our Twin Agent unit, Foam Engine 501, stood by at Andrews Air Force Base on both Saturday and Sunday during their annual air show. Manassas Volunteer Fire Company operates this unit which carries 1000 gallons of water, 110 gallons of class B foam, 300 lbs. of Purple-K extinguishing agent and other specialized tools because Manassas Regional Airport, the busiest general aviation airport in Virginia, is located in our first due area. Crews have been participating in this tradition for over 5 years now.  While at the show the crew from Manassas was given a particular area to patrol and respond in for all emergencies.  Thankfully the crews services were not required however, the volunteers from Manassas enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of the air show and hope to continue the tradition in years to come.

THE ZAMBELLI'S PUT ON FIREWORKS SAFETY CLASS

May 11, 2005 - Today the Manassas Volunteer Fire Company hosted a class for fire marshals form around the region.  The class, taught by Ron Wethli, a longtime employee of Zambelli International, a world renowned fireworks company, dealt with hazards involving indoor and outdoor fireworks displays. One of the more recent and widely covered tragedies involving fireworks occurred in Warwick, Rhode Island in February 2002, where 100 people were killed in a fire at the Station night club. The fire started after pyrotechnics were shot off just seconds after Great White, a band performing a concert at the club, came on stage. The fireworks quickly ignited foam which had been placed around the stage as a sound insulator. Thick smoke quickly spread through the club and within minutes, the one-story, wooden building was engulfed in flames, trapping hundreds as they rushed toward a single exit. In the morning the class was held at the station where a lecture was given. After lunch the group of around 100 went to a local park for some hands on demonstrations that included different types of fireworks.

Ricky Ratcliffe, a life member of the Fire Company and a pallbearer, said Carper was supportive of the company and as a token of appreciation for her 95th birthday was presented a special badge and plaque and made a honorary member of the company. HAZMAT LOCAL UPGRADED TO A BOX

May 1, 2005 - At 1623 hrs, Manassas City Fire Communications dispatched the Foam Engine, Hazmat Support and Chief 501 for a Hazmat Local in the trailer park at 9011 Centreville Road.  The initial call was for an odor of gas outside.  Chief 501 arrived first with PD and found a trailer with an extremely heavy concentration of propane and an unconscious female inside.  The officer and Chief Holman quickly removed the patient who was in respiratory arrest from the building and started medical aid. The Chief filled the box while the Foam Engine's crew cut the gas off to the house.  The Hazmat Support Unit used their intrinsically safe electric PPV fan to start ventilation.  A search of the house was conducted with no other victims found. It is believed that the owner purposefully turned the gas on to the home even though all appliances had been confiscated the previous day as a result of a police incident. The valves inside the home were also believed to be purposefully opened by the homeowner after the gas was turned on. The units cleared at 1647 hrs.
