IRONIC
CAUSE ON EVENING INVESTIGATION |
|
November 25, 2003 - At 1818 hours, Engine and Tower
501 were dispatched for a smell of smoke at Jennie Dean
Elementary School. Units encountered a very light haze
upon entering the building. After investigating, units
found the cause to be a short circuit in the fire alarm
control panel. |

TOWER
ON SMALL ATTIC FIRE |
|
November 24, 2003 - At 2227 hours,
Tower 501 was dispatched on mutual box 1515 for a house
fire. The first arriving unit advised a working fire in
the attic. Roughly 10 minuets later when Tower 501
arrived, county units were just getting a line on the
fire. One of Tower 501's crew went into the attic to
open up while the rest of the crew went to the room
below the fire to pull the ceiling. The fire was small
and spread was very limited. The fire was caused by
heat, radiating through the metal sheathing surrounding
the chimney pipe, which ignited the joists in the attic. |

FOAM
ENGINE 501 ON HAZMAT TASKFORCE ALARM |
|
November 24, 2003 - Early Monday morning Foam Engine
501 was special called on mutual box 0602 for an outside
fuel spill. Arriving county units advised their fire
communications that they had a 5000 gallon gasoline
tanker on it's side actively leaking. Foam Engine 501
laid a foam blanket over the next 10 hours to suppress
vapors while county units worked to contain the spill.
The Foam Engine, staffed completely by volunteers, was
on the scene for almost 12 hours and flowed 125 gallons
of foam. |

FUEL TANK
FIRE AT A LOCAL 7-11 |
|
November 22,
2003 -At 0612 hours Saturday morning, units were
dispatched for a reported commercial building fire at the 7-11
on Dumfries Road. While responding, communications advised
the units that there was a fire at the gas pumps. Engine and
Tower 501 arrived to find a tanker filling the gas station's
in-ground tanks and a small fire at one of the fill
connections. A failure of the static grounding system of the
tank allowed a spark to ignite the gas vapors. Foam Engine
501 laid down a foam blanket while Engine 501's crew
disconnected the fill line and capped the tank. |

The
Manassas Volunteer Fire Company has taken delivery of a
Hazardous Materials Support Unit. This unit was
purchased with money provided by the Federal Government
through the Weapons of Mass Destruction Grant Funds.
It was purchased to replace the smaller Spill
Containment Unit. This unit will provide the Fire
Company with space for more equipment such as intrinsically
safe fans, and hopper containing 250 lbs of oil dry, hazardous
materials suits, a wide variety of monitoring equipment and a
two person workstation with online chemical resource guides.
This unit will also carry two large decontamination tents, a
wide variety of Dewalt tools and fire fighting equipment. Once the unit arrived at the station, work began on
mounting the various equipment purchased for this unit.
By the end of January 2004, this unit should be fully
operational. |

ENGINE AND TOWER ON MUTUAL BOX 0502 FOR A HOUSE FIRE |
|
November 12, 2003 - At 2237 hours, Wagon and Tower
501 were dispatched to a reported house fire in
company 505's local. Engine 505 arrived on the scene
and announced the working fire. Tower 501, taking a
shortcut, beat Wagon 501 in just as Engine 505's crew
was charging their line. The Tower crew immediately
removed two large propane tanks, one of which was
venting gas with flames impinging on it, from the
garage where the engine crew was operating. They then began opening up the walls and
floor in the delta quadrant of the first floor and
basement. Wagon 501's crew stretched a second line
around the rear to
the basement and assisted with extinguishment and
overhaul. The fire, which appears to have started
because of a problem with the propane salamander, was
knocked down within 10 minuets and caused extensive
damage to the house.
Box
Alarm: Engines 505, 501, 504, Tower 501, Rescue 504
Battalion 501. |
